Site: GenealogySoftwareNews.com

There is a new genealogy software site – GenealogySoftwareNews.com.

Back at the end of last year or beginning of this year, it was originally called GenealogySW.com. I worked with one of the individuals behind it at the time as far as the back-end/server side, but they never quite got it off the ground. I helped get the software setup (at least at the beginning), but their updates were very sporadic.

According to the email I received this morning, they’ve since added a person who is helping them out on the content side.

I was surprised/impressed to see the new site, it’s very well put together, and makes me almost wish I had considered one of the blogger-type software setups for MacGenealogy.org. They mentioned that they weren’t going to cover Macintosh or PDA software partially since I was already doing so, and partially because they will have their hands full (which is probably true). They did ask if I wanted to join them, but I think it’s better to keep things seperate – Mac and PDA genealogy software would get drowned out by the Windows software.

Mac OS X version of GedWise (Palm)

I spoke with Battery Park Software, makers of GedWise (MobileGenealogy.com’s GedWise page), and later this year, or early next year, they will be releasing a Mac OS X version of their GedWise Palm OS genealogy software.

What this means is that you will be able to install and update GedWise on your Palm OS-based PDA through Mac OS X. Currently they have a beta version of GedWise for Linux, and then they are moving to Mac OS X. This is being built as a cross-platform application which is good news for Mac OS X Palm users.

When this is released, it will join My Roots as the only other active PDA-based genealogy application with Mac OS X support.

Its interface is very simple and intuitive, and it features the creation of plain text and HTML messages (simple or multipart), customization of subject and body using “smart tags” and attachments (including inline attachments in HTML messages). Changes:

    * Fixed compatibility issues with FileMaker 7.
    * Hopefully, the new XMail.osax 2.3 will fix crashes in certain machines when sending lots of messages.

Cost: Free

Requires: Mac OS X 10.3.x. NewsLetter 1.0 and further releases won’t work under previous versions of Mac OS X.
