Dropbox Dropping Support for OS X 10.4 – 10.5

Dropbox This is kind of a Big Deal for Mac users who are using older Macs running OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard), particularly those who are still using PowerPC-based Macs.

As of May 18, 2015, Dropbox will end support for both OS X 10.4 and 10.5. What this means is that users of those OS X versions will not be able to use the desktop application on those Macs.

NOTE: You will still be able to use the Dropbox website to upload/download files, and will still be able to use your iPhone/etc. clients, and other compatible devices/computers.

Circus Ponies 4 Circus Ponies Notebook 4.0 has been released, and this is a major update. The interestingly-named notebook/journaling app has been around for quite a while, and version 4.0 is available through the Mac App Store. Mac Bundle 5.0 at StackSocial – Good for Genealogists

Snapheal 2.0 The Mac Bundle 5.0 at StackSocial, a “Name Your Own Price” bundle, is one of the better deals for Mac-using genealogists, even if it doesn’t have any Mac OS X genealogy software in the bundle.

It ends on May 7th, and it comes with several applications, including software that would let you run Windows apps on your Mac (without needing to install Windows or run Boot Camp), an application that can remove unwanted objects from photos, as well as fix damaged photos (tears, scratches, etc.), data recovery software, and PDF/OCR software.

The apps I listed above are all very handy to a lot of genealogists, and can be had for under $10 (or more deepening on how much you feel it’s worth to you). If you paid full price for all of the apps, it would be over $800, and even the apps I singled out would cost $280.

Microsoft OneNote for Mac 15.1

Microsoft OneNote for Mac Microsoft has updated OneNote, the very popular “digital notebook” that they released for Macs back in March. OneNote became free with that release. Prior to that, when it was Windows-only on the desktop, it was not free.

Similar to Evernote, it allows you to add and edit notes across multiple platforms. LifeHacker had a very comprehensive comparison between Evernote and OneNote. I can see the appeal for OneNote, and I know a lot of genealogists who have been using it on Windows for quite some time.
