Birthdaybook, the Applescript application that collects and reminds you of upcoming birthdays, has been updated (version 3.4), to correct some errors from the migration to a Universal Binary. It integrates with Address Book and iCal, and can generate lists to be printed out as well.

You can download it here

Changes:
Birthdaybook 3.4 addresses an issue with Birthdaybook 3.3 not working on some systems with OS 10.3.9 or earlier. This was a problem with the new universal (intel/PPC) build style and has been fixed.

Records Manager 2.9.2

John Woodward has updated Records Manager extensively since we last mentioned it. Records Manager is MacOS X software that allows you to collect important records (such as bank statements or receipts) in a database and allow for easy addition of new records, easy access to existing records, and optional automatic backup of the database. Think of it as a replacement for a file cabinet but with easier filing and retrieval. You can optionally encrypt your records with 128-bit AES encryption to keep them secure. It costs $24 and requires Mac OS X 10.2.8.

Some of the changes since it was last mentioned here:
* Added ability to find by contents of notes.
* Reimplemented Find function to support multiple find criteria and to allow finding by modified date and pathname.
* Added “Smart Folders” — continuously-updated folders that contain files matching specified criteria.
* Added folder/file icons to the folder/file window, to allow you to distinguish smart folders from regular folders.
* Added Backup Database command to backup upon demand.
* Added the ability to drag/drop multiple files/folders.
* Added the ability to associate notes with folders as well as files.

ohmiGene 0.90 beta fc1

January 27, 2006 by admin · Leave a Comment

ohmiGene beta 0.90 fc1 (FC = Final Candidate/Release Candidate) is now available. ohmiGene is a Mac OS X genealogy application. It’s almost ready for production and real-world use. A lot of work was done on importing and exporting GEDCOMs, including work on submissions/LDS issues. Large files can take a little time to import.

A new base (Utf-8) format is available. The data is saved in the data base with encoding UTF8 and that allows the use of non-Latin languages, exported in a gedcom by ohmiGene, and read by any software able to read a file encoded in Utf-8.

Google Earth for Mac

January 11, 2006 by admin · Leave a Comment

FINALLY!

Google Earth for Mac OS X

Google Earth: Want to know more about a specific location? Dive right in — Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world’s geographic information at your fingertips. Fly from space to your neighborhood. Type in an address and zoom right in. Search for schools, parks, restaurants, and hotels. Get driving directions. Tilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings. Save and share your searches and favorites. Even add your own annotations.

It is free for personal use. Of great use to genealogists, either just researching where their ancestors lived, or mapping our directions to a cemetery. Not all parts of the earth are shown in high resolution, but enough are that it can be a neat tool to use. There are online websites with mapping (including Google Maps and Yahoo Maps), but Google Earth is different - I can’t really explain it - you’ll just have to try it out if you get the chance.
